We have some really interesting physicians as members of iMedExchange, and since those of you that aren't members don't get to hear from them, we'll continue to profile some of them in our blog. Today I'd like to introduce you to Jeffrey Atkins, MD. Dr. Atkins is a physician who lives in St. Louis, MO and is currently leaving private practice and going into Urgent Care practice.
How do you spend your time off? My time off is spent mostly with my family. I have a daughter and two sons. My daughter is in her senior year at Bryant University. She plays Division I Volleyball and I love to track the team's season, which is fairly easy to do because many of her matches are webcasted either in video or audio. My older son is in his senior year of high school. He plays soccer year round and I try to make all the games I can. We'll travel a couple of times the bonding time spent is terrific. He's in the process of narrowing down universities for us to make visits to. My younger son is five years old and constantly on the go. He loves school, plays soccer and baseball and is nonstop. Between all the children and my wife, I am blessed and happy to spend most of my time with them.
You seem quite involved in your kids sports, do you coach? I am privileged to coach Ben's kindergarten soccer team. What a rush. 12 four and five year olds always on the go. I love to teach them and have fun with them. I have coached for 17 years now - soccer, volleyball and baseball. Loved every minute of it. If I coach Ben all the way through eighth grade, that will be 25 years of coaching! I wouldn't give it up for the world.
Wow! Besides family and sports, do you have any other passions? When I'm not with the kids and boning up on the latest in medicine, I love to taste wine. I've been tasting, collecting and sharing for about eight years now. My palate has changed dramatically over those years - at first I loved the big over the top Aussie shiraz and young California cabernet, as the years and bottles have passed, my palate has changed. Current favorites are California cabs with about two or three years of age on them and California pinot noirs - young and ripping. However, if I could only have one wine on the proverbial desert island, it would be champagne - true champagne from the Champagne region in France. It has all the characteristics that wine lovers need. It can be drunk young but ages well. It can be drunk anytime - alone or with friends and fellow wine lovers. It comes in all price ranges. It has varied aromas and flavors that make each champagne and each bottle a new experience.
