Seattle HealthTech Meetup featuring Rob Coppedge

Last night, iMedExchange hosted the inaugural Seattle HealthTech Meetup. The event was sponsored by Faultline Ventures, with Rob Coppedge leading the discussion. It was a great event with 17 people from 14 different regional health care companies including Array Health Solutions, Clarity Health Services, Health Phone Solutions, Health Unity, Limeade, QTrait, Raffetto Herman and SnapForSeniors. Rob Coppedge, Director for Corporate Development at iMedExchange and founder of Faultline Ventures, spoke on how Seattle can become a more vibrant and effective hub of healthcare technology. Highlighting the advantage of Seattle's entrepreneurial spirit and focus on innovation, he pointed out that Seattle is not as risk averse as some other cities currently thought of as healthcare hubs such as Nashville and Louisville. Rob did a great job getting the conversation started by speaking of his experience as a seasoned health care technology analyst and investor. Following Rob's introduction, the group discussed Seattle's distinct attitude of "doing well by doing good' and left the evening event feeling energized and looking forward to more gatherings where active collaboration and brainstorming is the focus. Physician Profile: Gary Levin, MD

We have some really interesting physicians as members of iMedExchange, and since those of you that aren't members don't get to hear from them, we'll continue to profile some of them in our blog. Today I'd like to introduce you to Gary Levin, MD. Dr. Levin is an Ophthalmologist in Southern California. How did you choose to specialize in ophthalmology? My first experience with eyes was a NSF research grant in which I had the opportunity to work with bovine eyes to analyze eye lens DNA and RNA. In medical school I became interested in eye surgery while working with an ophthalmologist on an elective during internship. I liked the lifestyle that ophthalmology provided, allowing me to balance family with work more than in other specialties. How do you spend time off? Homeschooling and creative endeavors with my children. I spend some time mentoring younger physicians and I am also reestablishing social contact with my medical school and college alumni. I'm also interested in politics and as I have been a lifelong friend with Senator Joseph Lieberman I have campaigned for him in each Presidential and Vice Presidential campaign. You list hiking as a hobby - what do you like most about it? Almost anywhere I am, I am able to hike. It's outdoors, excellent exercise and helps me to maintain my weight and stay in shape without the risk of injury from jogging. It's a routine I will be able to maintain indefinitely. It's a social activity as well, giving me time to think and talk with my exercise partner.]]> How do your hobbies balance your life in medicine? My specialty requires a fair amount of sitting, either examining patients in clinic or operating at a microscope - my job is basically sedentary. When I get up in the AM (pre dawn) I take a walk, which wakes me up and every morning I am inspired by such simple things as the sun coming up. I also usually try to take a brisk walk at lunch time. I hear you like to read, what are your favorites? My favorite read has been Michael Crichton's Andromeda Strain, while my favorite book I've read recently is Maggie Mahar's non-fiction treatise on healthcare, Money Driven Medicine. One of my other favorite pastimes is writing. I have a blog called the Health Train Express where I discuss health care issues. What do you like most about the part of California you live in? I live in Riverside County which extends from the Colorado River toward the ocean. It has mountains and hills surrounding it. I spend part of the year in the desert where there is golfing, trail hiking and grandiose mountain views. The colors change every hour throughout the day. Other parts of California are some of my favorite vacation spots though - Monterrey and Carmel via a drive up the coast through Big Sur. I used to ski a great deal and loved Mammoth Mountain, and when I lived in San Diego sailing was a favorite activity. Wow, sounds beautiful! What is Riverside like? Riverside is a mixture of old California, with a history of citrus farming. Parts of the city have an old small town feeling and some magnificent tree lined boulevards. The city has embarked upon a 1.5 billion dollar renaissance program to build bicycle parks and rehabilitate old ones. In addition, the medical community is a mix of group and solo private practices. You said you like to mentor younger physicians - would you like to end with some wise words? I have a son with cystic fibrosis, which has taught me a great deal about chronic and fatal illnesses and it's affect on families. This event altered my life and my priorities a great deal in regards to medical practice. In addition to this, there was a major catastrophic flood that destroyed my office, practice and home - I survived all of it. Each of these events taught me coping skills and that it is important to develop other skills for enjoyment. While medicine can be a main focus, it should remain only a part of one's life. You never know when or if it will be taken from you. Maintain strong family ties, don't sacrifice these for the sake of your professional life. These lessons have all been learned the hard way.

Pawling Mountain Club

This past week-end Rob Coppedge and I had the privilege of visiting the Pawling Mountain Club about 90 minutes North of Manhattan. The club is partially owned and managed by Philip Bonanno, MD a renowned plastic surgeon and businessman from Westchester, NY. This club is one of the truly unique clubs in the world....a warm and relaxing venue at which members can participate in live bird hunts or spend their time on the trap/skeet course...a very challenging and well laid out course that is apparently great training for competition. Overlooking the Appalachian Mountains and set on over 1000 acres of semi-wooded and rolling land, the location is gorgeous. The Lodge is not pretentious or pristine - it's a comfortable hunting lodge with most anything you need. There is a sizeable full time staff including a top-notch chef and the folks that tend to the cadre of field dogs. The Lodge looks over an area that closely resembles a typical 18th hole at a golf course...indeed there are some similarities to how it's all laid out. There is a man-made lake right outside the Lodge deck area as you look off into the mountains. In the Summer, they hold a family event at which there is fantastic fireworks display over the lake. Part of the success is tied to the fact that they encourage family participation. The club is now 25 years old and they are starting to get the second generation and beginnings of the third. It was a real privilege to spend time with Dr. Bonanno and the other iMedExchange members in such a special place.

Google Flu Trends - Interactions of Health Care and the Internet

Yesterday, Google, Inc. unveiled the newest service from Google.org, the philanthropic side of Google. The new service? Flu Trends - a free Web service that uses aggregated information from searches that contain 'flu-like' keywords - 'cough', 'fever' and 'muscle aches', to name a few - to predict the outbreak of the flu. The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal both published articles today that provide a bit more information on the service. As shown in the New York Times graph below (click the image to enlarge), Google Flu Trends showed great similarity to the reports by the US Centers for Disease Control - but often up to 10 days earlier. Using services such as Google Flu Trends (Yahoo has also reported accuracy in early flu detection) could help with earlier prevention and fewer cases of influenza, which causes an average of 36,000 deaths annually. Flu Trends is a great example of the benefits of the interaction between the web and health care when the right data is used in the right way. While many doctors bemoan the fact that their patients come in full of information they gleaned from the web - some accurate, some not - perhaps this shows that by using the 'wisdom of the masses' (or at least the actions of the masses) we may be able to make more informed decisions with better forecasting. Expansions of this service could greatly benefit the public in numerous ways. There is particular potential for this service if applied to other illnesses - especially those with low rates of being reported to health professionals - such as STD's. Want to discuss this more? Today I'd like to introduce you to Deborah Benzil, MD. Dr. Benzil is a Neurosurgeon in Westchester. How did you get into Neurosurgery? I stumbled into neurosurgery more than anything else. In medical school, my neurology rotation was "over-subscribed" so they asked for volunteers to do neurosurgery instead. I volunteered thinking it would just be three weeks and I would never get a chance to see neurosurgery again...well that was 25 years ago and I am still doing it every day! What do you do with your time off? My time off is devoted to my family (I have a college freshman and a high school senior), reading, travel, cooking/wine and hiking. Every weekend my husband, dog and I take some lovely 3-10 mile hike in the Hudson Valley. In the summer, I also have an extensive vegetable and flower garden that requires a bit of time. Which would you say is your favorite hobby? Favorite hobby...hum, hard to choose between music, reading, travel, wine...Probably travel because it allows for a whole lot of things and also means that I am on vacation! When we travel (always as a family until my daughter left for college) we look to enhance our cooking/wine stuff, and when we return, we keep the travel experience alive by recreating the food, etc. ]]> Sounds great! Where have you traveled? England, Canada, Mexico, Belize, Spain, France, Peru, Greece, Morocco, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Bolivia, Portugal, India. Wow, do you have a favorite you would like to return to? I almost never go back to the same place twice...I am not a "return to Club Med in X every year" type of traveler. But we have a trip planned to France and Spain in the coming year! Mostly, I love finding new exciting places. Some of the places where would I most like to go next include Viet Nam, Turkey, Sicily, South Africa, and Australia/New Zealand...but walking in the Alps, the Himalayas and similar places is also very appealing. When you're home, what do you like most about living in New York? I love NYC!!! I love that I can live on 32 acres, at the end of a small road just 30 miles from the vibrancy of NYC. Probably my favorite thing about the city is the diversity-I shop in Greek grocers in Queens, Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, Middle Eastern stores on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn, Russian shops on Coney Island...etc. Most often we find small ethnic restaurants (where else can you eat Moroccan, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Thai, etc all in one city?) but can also enjoy that very special meal at Daniel or Per Se. I love to wander the little neighborhoods - SoHo, TriBeCa, Little India, Murray Hill, etc etc--I just walk around and wander into the shops and galleries. I love the live theater and try to get to a good number of shows every year. Hopefully as life gets quieter (ie kids at college) I can spend more time exploring the galleries and museums. I go now but less than I would like. Are there any issues you are particularly devoted to? I have been very focused on the presidential election-volunteering on many levels. By the time you publish this...hopefully the election will have been decided in a way I find satisfactory (yes I am an Obama supporter!). Beyond that, greening of hospitals and health care has become a passion of mine. In part, it occurred to me as an excellent business opportunity and I am working on building a consulting company that can advise hospitals on green issues (soup to nuts). I was working on a plan to update a local hospital and when looking at important trends that should drive hospitals, environmental issues seem the absolute most important. Why so? Hospitals account for much illness unfortunately - asthma rates in urban areas are highest around hospitals, there are obviously high infection rates for patients in hospitals for extended stays, there are mental health issues with hospital personnel who work in less than optimal environments, just to name a few. Also, hospitals account for 10% of all energy expenditures in the country - just think what an incremental change in this could do for the entire country's energy profile! Waste is another big issue. Medical waste is not only extremely expensive but is a huge part of the solid waste problem in the country. I could go on forever on this issue. My company is available - no takers for the project yet but...I am hoping any day now!

Election Day!

Over a year ago, iMedExchange started a campaign to videotape physicians asking questions for the candidates about their healthcare policies. The videos from our 'Physician Questions' campaign were submitted to the YouTube/CNN Primary Debates and we received responses from both Governor Bill Richardson and Senator Barack Obama. If you're curious, these questions can be found on the YouTube iMedExchange Channel. The election seemed so far away when we were putting together the questions, not even knowing yet who the final two candidates would be, but the questions were a great way to get the conversation started. Since then, our physician members have discussed the candidates in both the groups and forums on iMedExchange. Find our physician members discussing their opinions of the Republican Convention, our Alaska docs discussing Governor Palin, Senator Obama's responses to physician questions and more here. But the day has come. Election day, I think to everyone's relief, has finally arrived. I hope that everyone will vote and make their voice heard in deciding who will be the 44th President of the United States of America. In the meantime, I suppose all we can do is wait (or discuss your thoughts on iMedExchange!).

Why I'm excited about iMedExchange

Like all of my fellow physicians, I work hard to earn my income. I studied for years, and often work long and erratic hours and am now battling the economic squeeze felt by many of us. So, like everyone else, I want to do the best I can managing the money I earn. While successful money management is always a challenge, particularly when you are as busy as most of us are, it is incredibly difficult given the crisis in the financial markets. Thankfully, iMedExchange gets it! They get us! Physician Profile: Carolyn McDougald, MD

We have some really interesting physicians as members of iMedExchange, and since those of you that aren't members don't get to hear from them, we'll continue to profile some of them in our blog. Today I'd like to introduce you to Carolyn McDougald, MD. Dr. McDougald is a family physician who lives in Texas and is currently starting her own clinic just south of Houston. Growing up, did you plan to be a doctor? I'm not the average doc, I'm a late bloomer - I have always loved medicine and science, but my family was all blue collar who felt women married, had children, and could work, but not have a career. Neither of my parents finished high school, although my mom did go back later and get her GED when I was about 10. I was the oldest and wanted to go to college, but I did not know enough how to make it happen at the time so I worked at various jobs from retail to waitressing, until I stumbled across Law Enforcement. I became a Deputy Sheriff at the ripe old age of 21! I learned a lot in seven years about life and myself before I realized I needed more, so as a 27 year old single mom of a two year boy, I took my retirement money out, quit the Sheriff's Department and started on a long journey. I went to the University of Houston and attended medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Ft Worth, where I also did my residency in Family Medicine at the now demolished Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas. I finished residency in 2001. So on the theme of not being the average doc, have you done anything out of the ordinary recently? Actually, I initially found your site while I was researching Alaska - I was trying to decide about doing a Locums position there in Nome, Kotzebue or Bethel. I came across the Alaska Docs group at your site and joined up. I just got back from spending an incredible 5 months with my sons in Nome practicing Bush medicine - what a great refresher course on Family Medicine! Actually, I did things there I would never been able to do in the lower-forty eight because we had no choice - you do it or patients do without! I plan on going back next summer.]]> Wow, that's great! How did you choose family medicine? I chose Family Medicine after I realized I loved almost every rotation during training, and most importantly, because I bore easily. Family Medicine covers just about every facet of medicine and is definitely not boring. You never know what is going to walk through that door! Even when the patient says they are there for a sore throat - they may have another agenda, or it may be something more serious than just a sore throat. What do you like most about family medicine? There are so many things one can do with Family Medicine - I have worked in an Urgent Care, then did Concierge Medicine for a while. I had a mobile clinic for the uninsured, and then a mobile geriatric practice where I went to nursing homes, and made house calls for home bound patients. Now, after my adventure in the Alaskan Bush, I am about to start my first Clinic (not mobile!) in a small town south of Houston, Texas. Family Medicine has allowed me to have a grand experience in medicine - I can't wait to see how it all plays out! So we've learned a lot about your clinical background, what do you do when you're off the clock? I have three wonderful boys - 22yrs, 14 yrs and 4 yrs - also an incredible granddaughter who is 9 months. I am an avid reader of many different genres, also an avid knitter. I usually spend my time away from work with my family while trying to fit in as much reading and knitting as possible! We like to do all sorts of things together from video games, cards and board games to outside stuff. We love to fish and explore new places. We all love sports - especially baseball - Go Astros! My boys have all played baseball - I have coached and assistant coached for 15 years and have plenty of years left for the four year old!
